This is yet another song that I had never heard of until I found it Soodlum's
100 Irish Ballads Volume 1. I sing this song very often and love belting it out. The Soodlum's version is somewhat short having only three verses. I've recently (May 1998) found additional verses in Internet which fill out the song nicely. The song is of humorous cautionary advice to young maidens on the inability of old men in fulfilling their matrimonial duties.
When with
Das Trio it would be sung by Maike Weyerts while I accompanied her on my concertina..
Even more recently (October, 2013), I found another amusing English 5-verse variant under the title of
An Old Man Came Courting Me given in
Marrow Bones.
